West Bengal is the largest economy in eastern India, sixth among Indian states by nominal GDP and about 6.15 percent of national GDP, with gross state domestic product estimated at Rs 21.48 lakh crore for 2026 to 2027. Services were 53.10 percent of the 2026 to 2027 estimate and industry 29.77 percent. The technology base is concentrated in the Kolkata metropolitan area at Salt Lake Sector V in Bidhannagar and New Town Rajarhat, with secondary centers at Siliguri and Durgapur. At an ASSOCHAM and STPI event in Kolkata on 16 January 2026, state IT secretary Shubhanjan Das said the state has 32 government IT parks and more than 60 private IT parks housing over 2,800 IT and ITeS companies and employing more than two lakh people, that software exports had grown from about Rs 8,000 crore fifteen years earlier to over Rs 40,000 crore, and that West Bengal ranks sixth in India for data center capacity with 11 private data centers operational. The older industrial economy is still substantial: steel and heavy engineering at Durgapur and Asansol, petrochemicals and fertilizers at Haldia, rolling stock at Titagarh and Chittaranjan, which produced 431 locomotives in 2019 to 2020, and the Kolkata Leather Complex at Bantala. West Bengal is India's second-largest tea producer at 414.08 million kg in 2022 to 2023, or 30.3 percent of national output, and supplies about 88 percent of India's jute.

West Bengal splits into two very different buying populations. The IT and ITeS employers in Sector V and New Town are mostly delivery sites whose technology budgets sit with a head office in Mumbai, Bengaluru or overseas, so the local leader influences rather than signs. The real in-state committees are at the Kolkata-headquartered promoter groups and PSUs, where the family or group office and the CFO carry unusual weight, procurement is tender driven for the public sector undertakings, and cycles are long. Engineering and manufacturing buyers in Durgapur, Asansol, Haldia and Titagarh are plant and engineering led, with technical evaluation and pilots before procurement sign-off. Nothing moves quickly without the group level sponsor.

Partner ecosystem

TCS is the largest technology employer in the state, with roughly 54,000 to 55,000 people as of January 2026, and received STPI Kolkata's award for the highest software exports from West Bengal. Wipro, IBM, Accenture, Cognizant and Capgemini all run delivery operations in Sector V, and Infosys opened a 320,000 sq ft development center at New Town Rajarhat on 18 December 2024, with investment of over Rs 426 crore and capacity for more than 4,000 employees in a hybrid model, working on cloud, AI and digital for manufacturing, logistics, financial services and energy and utilities. The state's flagship Bengal Silicon Valley Tech Hub at New Town is a 250 acre site focused on AI, data centers and GCCs, with 41 firms allotted land, about Rs 30,000 crore of expected investment and at least 7,500 jobs projected as of January 2026. The state also runs a Siliguri data center equipped with Nvidia H100 GPUs and was finalizing a proposal to open that capacity to private AI training workloads.
